One Flew the Coop...

The last few days have been strikingly bittersweet at our house. Our 19 year old, Brittany Ann, took her boxes, clothes and a few of our household items and moved into her own apartment on Sunday.

There were not many tears on Sunday, but as the enemy would have it there were heated words and tears on Friday night. The emotional tension of three women who have been one room away from each other for the last 18 years spewed forth like lava from an erupting volcano. Not even kidding. My husband - the only man in the house, sat in the chair and watched the drama unfold like a spectator at a hockey game.

I must admit - it was more the girls who let loose with angry words and accusation, but as I am learning it is no small thing to get sucked into the moment when emotions are running high.

Friday, my barely grown daughter announced she did not want to spend one more minute in this house and with a screeching tone declared me insufferable. At that point I realized there was no talking to her in this state, and needing her to realize how far beyond the boundaries she had ventured offered: "If that is truly the way you feel then you need to pack up your things and move them out tonight."

Her shock was mixed with fierce anger, but with a few footstomps down the hall she began to pack up what she would need for two days and left. My husband and I offered the olive branch - we both told her we did not want her to leave that way but felt we had little choice given her attitude and the feelings she expressed. We invited her to take the opportunity to talk this out with us calmly and without all the emotions. She replied, "I don't know what to say to that."

I started to fret once she was on her way to a friend's apartment for the night. But, then something happened. I realized that while this is somewhat painful and difficult - it may be necessary for us to cut the apron strings and for her to finally learn to fly on her own. I prayed for a while, then I reminded the enemy that he is a liar when all sorts of false accusation and worrisome rhetoric began to make it's way into my head. I reminded him he has no place in our lives because we belong to Christ. I also told him he doesn't get to tell me something bad is going to happen to her because of this... I slept well that night.

The next morning my heart was full of love for her and hoping to reconnect and recover from the night before. I dropped her sister off at work and went to Wal-Mart to pick up the few items we had talked about she would need. Then I purchased a gift card for her to buy groceries with and called to find out if there was anything else she would need. She said, "I'm sorry."

She asked me what I was doing and I told her buying the towels and things she needed for her new apartment. She said, "AWWWW... Thank you, Momma."

I asked, "Do you want to come home?"

She said, "Yes."

I asked, "Do you want me to come get you?"

She said, "Yes."

I was relieved and she was more humble. Things felt entirely different in that moment.

She got all moved in on Sunday and now we have a mostly empty room. Devoid of the life and trappings of a teenager in full swing. I'm so excited for her, while praying with great fervor that all works out well as God would plan.

Milestones are hard for me. My Jay never ventured out on his own as an adult. He will always and ever be seventeen as far as this earthly existence goes... But oh the glorious reunion that awaits us as we finally see him HOME in heaven again one day. God's grace and mercy are such a blessing at times like this. No tears, just a few bittersweet moment to mark our path along the way.

When did our babies grow up? That's what I asked Scott on Sunday night when we had come home and settled down for the evening. When?

He laughed. "It seems a long time ago."

It would seem they've been doing it all along. I just didn't realize how much until Sunday.

Her children arise and call her blessed... I think!

As I have written before... I have two wonderful and beautiful daughters. Brittany who is 19 going on 35 and Taylor who is a stunning beauty at 17... inside and out. Watching them morph from little girls into beautiful, confident and sometimes "willful" young women has been both a blessing and a joy. But with it comes the bittersweet angst that Momma Birds must feel when booting their babies out of the nest for the first time.
.
"It's time to fly!"
.
From a wall-to-wall conversation she and I were having over at Facebook she posted the following quote:

"She [my mother] was the force around which our world turned. My mother was propelled through the universe by the brute force of reason. She was the judge in all our arguments. One disapproving word from her was enough to send us off to hide in a corner, where we would cry and fantasize our own martyrdom. And yet. One kiss could restore us to princedom. Without her, our lives would dissolve into chaos." — Nicole Krauss (The History of Love: A Novel)
.
At first I wondered if she really intended for that to be about me... but then, I realized that she did. I didn't know how I felt about it until I asked God and then her. For her this quote resonated so loudly of our relationship. And well, the last three sentences simply blessed my heart. She said that the blessings she received from me as her mother outweigh the insanity that sometimes comes with being my daughter. I'm truly blessed to have such bold, confident and lovely young women as my girls. I love them with all my heart. Kisses... BRITTANY and TAYLOR. Y Momma
.
"28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: 29 "Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all." 30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:28-30 (NKJV)
.
My Brittany has a blog of her own: You will find her here... At Brittany Ann - please visit and read what she has written. Thanks a bundle.

Brittany on "My Job Description"

The aforementioned Job Description in the title is actually something similar to what my father once wrote about my mother on a loan application. (He was a bit witty and on the funny side with it, but he really saw her job as a Stay-At-Home-Mom this way...)

So last night my Britt wrote on my wall at Facebook about "My Job Description."

Oh, and I probably could add "Private Investigator." I won't say what I find, but it is very interesting how the instincts of motherhood tend to lead us right into the truth - well, shall I say instincts and prayer... Without God, I'd be done. Stick a fork in me! :o)

CODE WORD: Milkshake

This is Brittany... my eldest. She has met a young man named Stephan who is going to pick her up from work and take her out for ice cream tonight.

So she called me a little while ago and said, "Mom, Stephan is coming to pick me up and we are going out for some ice cream."

"Okay. Who's Stephan?"

"My new friend, I told you about him."

"Oh. Okay."

"But, I called to let you know I might need a 'milkshake.'"

I had to wait a minute and let my brain understand what she was trying to tell me. My mental file search option was rolling through my brain looking for items marked Brittany and Milkshake.

Then she said it again and it finally clicked. "Milkshake."

A few years ago when she began dating we developed a code word, a nonsense word so if she called to tell me "I'm at ________________ with __________________ and I need a milkshake." That I would come and pick her up right away no questions asked.

So ... we agreed since they were going out for ice cream that she should call and say, "Hey Mom, we're at Sonic and I wanted to know if you'd like a milkshake."

OPERATION: Ditch My Date - CODE WORD: Milkshake....

Mom's on call - And awaiting further instructions.

And, BTW, this message will self-destruct in 30 seconds... (Not really, but I've always wanted to say that.)
**UPDATE**

OPERATION: Ditch My Date - A No Go, I repeat a No Go.
She made it home safe and sound without any rescue attempts by Covert Dating Ops Agent Mom. She did however get a text message while she was with him that read:
"OPERATION: Ditch My Date - CODE WORD: Milkshake activated. Agent Mom standing by awaiting furthing instructions. This message will self destruct in 30 seconds."

She said she had a hard time explaining why she was busting a gut laughing. I called her a few minutes later to see if she was okay and she said, yeah - I can't reply because that message is going to self destruct!

A Letter to Brittany

My Dearest Girl,
.
This week marks the final seven days of your high school journey. While I know you have been done with your courses and sleeping everyday since the end of February, I also know what a delightfully daunting time this can be in a young woman's life. I am so proud of you.
.
It seems like only yesterday that I dropped you off for the first day of kindergarten at Frazier Elementary School. You wore a little cream colored denim jumper with red patchwork shirt. Your little round cherub cheeks smiling as we walked up the sidewalk to your classroom. I also remember the uncertain look on your face just before I left. I wanted to scoop you up and take you back home with me.
.
I had been through this before with your brother, but his cavalier behavior left me aching for my baby boy... He had said, "You can go now." You, on the other hand, you seemed to need me, and I so wanted to stay. But sometimes we must forsake our feelings and move ahead no matter how painful it is. We have learned that well these last eighteen years, haven't we?
.
I'm so proud of the woman you are becoming. I say becoming because there are many more lessons to learn as you crest the tide of adulthood over the next few years. I look forward to that growth and those changes. I know you will handle them remarkably well. You are wise beyond your years, Brittany Ann, and I am so blessed to have you for a daughter.
.
You leave me in awe most everyday with your simple ways and strong faith. I could never have faced down the many things you have in these last four years when I was your age. I was a scattered, fragmented mess. You are such a blessing to me.
.
I want to tell you a few of the joys of being your mother. I can think of many so I will try to keep it to just a few:
.
1.) You still come and sit and snuggle in my lap when you don't feel good. Now, granted your nearly 6 foot frame almost topples us out of the recliner and I do complain a little... but inside, I am secretly just jumping for joy.
.
2.) Watching movies at 2 A. M. while eating sopapilla cheesecake right out of the oven.
.
3.) Your love of tradition and SNOWMAN SOUP. Yum, my mouth waters and I long for a cold day just thinking about it.
.
4.) Considering the change in you from little girl to nearly grown... When you were little I fixed your hair for you, now I can't even make a suggestion unless I am sure you will agree. As a little girl you could not wait to play in the snow. Now you raise up from your warm nest on the couch and say, "It looks pretty." (This from a view through the window.)
.
5.) How close we've become over the years. I love that when I cry you just want to hug me and when you cry, I just want to hug you. It is good to be loved and to love back. I love you back.
.
6.) The funny reaction you have to your adorable baby pictures.
.
7.) The things people say about you. WOW!
.
8.) That you never gave up, even when our life was messy, painful and hard.
.
9.) The strength of your faith and the way you stand your ground when someone attacks it. You are quiet and gentle, but strong. A remarkable young woman.
.
10.) Eating snocones.
.
Okay.. so that is all I can think of right now. Oh yeah, and you let me have a grand graduation celebration even though you were not too excited about it at first.
.
Please don't get me wet in the water balloon fight! PLEASE!
.
I can't wait to watch you cross the stage and receive your diploma, sweetie. We are so proud of you! Congratulations.
.
Love,
.
MOM
