My Heroes this Week

Have you ever had one of those days? You know when everything seems to start out fine but somewhere in the middle of it something goes awry and then all of a sudden you are in the midst of a crisis that you are not prepared to meet. (NOTE: No one in my family is in dire circumstance or emergency medical care... We just had a crisis of a different sort this week! A home related crisis!)

The crisis - Washing Machine Flood.

On Monday, the young man who works for our landlord came out and fixed the washer and dryer connections so washing my first load of laundry came around Noon that day. I loaded up the washer with our much needed supply of towels and put it on large load, long cycle... Here we go.

The Laundry Area is in the garage as our home was built at a time when that was the appropriate place for laundry. I wonder, however, if they ever considered the exhausting nature of 100 degree weather days we have here in Texas most every Summer.

Also in the garage is the remnants of our move. Stacks of boxes on top of a couple of dressers we need to empty and send to the dump (in pieces, I might add). As well as ceiling fans, tools of various types and in various storage containers and ... Then there are the items I instructed my oldest child to leave in boxes stored in the garage since she will be making a move of her own to Denton in August for school. Add some Christmas ornaments and bagged laundry and you are getting the idea that we have about a half a garage of odds and ends that need a home.

About 2:20 PM I went out to check on the load I had started and found one half of our garage was about and 1-1/2 inches deep in water. I felt panic hit my heart as I looked at the towering stack of cardboard boxes and plastic bags with miscellaneous furniture thrown in for good measure. "OH LORD! Please show me what Your plan is for all of this." I rushed to the washing machine that was hemorrhaging water and opened it to find it had overflowed. I shut it off, somewhat relieved the plumbing had not burst, but frustrated that I still was not able to do laundry and now it appeared we needed a new machine.

So Eldest Daughter and I got out in the garage and started slooping the water out into the driveway with brooms and I was using all manner of what we would later term "Old Lady Phrases..." I think I said, "Good Grief" at least 50 times. And a couple of "Goodness Gracious," and "Heaven's to Betsy" came out as well.

We slooped and sloshed water until there was only a wet surface in the garage and then eldest began to investigate the mountain of stacked boxes and furniture to see if she could find her stereo and CD box which she feared had experienced the worst. Oh yes, there were many boxes there. So we began to unpack and repack her stuff as she shimmied in and out of the narrow path she made back to her stuff. We had to recover a ceiling fan and began moving the laundry items we could get to...

I called my husband, flustered and overwhelmed by the tremendous mess I was standing in. I was also a bit angry that he had elected to leave all that mess stacked in the garage when I had specifically asked him not to do so. Oh, the joy of it.

Then I closed the door on our rapidly drying garage and headed out to pick up one child from work and drop the other off. I had earlier advised my husband he might want to pick up something to translate our four inch dryer vent opening to the two and a half to three inch opening in the wall. He did so. He called me back to let me know he was on his way.

On my way home from picking up the Younger Girl, I called to check on hubs' progress with our laundry disaster. He said, "I've given up." I can't figure out why it keeps overfilling the tub.

I was now frustrated and angry. I vowed to get home and get online to find out what part we needed or what thing we could do ourselves to fix this problem. He said, "See you later."

And we hung up. When I arrived home I learned that he also had not been able to fix the dryer problem either. The item he purchased was not a proper fit on either end so now we did not know what to do.

I told him I was going to leave him with the dryer while I looked up a way to fix our washing machine. He followed me to the computer and after about 80 searches we found a website that explained how to resolve the most common causes for our overfilling problem. We had to check the little tube that runs from the washer tub to the "Water Level Control" switch on our machine and see if it had a hole in it or had become disconnected. And, that is exactly what happened - the tube was loose from the switch. My hubs replaced the tube and tightened it to the switch with a security tie. Put the machine back together and we filled the tub... And, it worked. I threw my hands up in the air like we had scored a touchdown and said, "We did it, and we did it together!"

At that point I was thinking we totally would have won the couples challenge on the "Here Comes the Newlyweds" show if they took couples who had been married 11 years. :)

Our dryer dilemma however was not resolved. We went to Home Depot and found a small PVC piece of pipe that would work perfectly. It cost $1.97. He was a bit disappointed and made a dismayed noise when he founde the item. The $6.00 piece of metal extension he had purchased earlier only served to demonstrate the cheaper piece was just what we needed. We kept it just in case we have to do this again in the future.

Once home he put on the PVC piece and it worked perfectly. Our laundry crisis was completely averted and overcome. Though we are still recovering waterlogged items from the garage. HMMM.

This makes my eldest child and my husband totally my heroes for the week! They stepped in high fashion and did what I could not do! WHOO HOO!

Gratitude Post

Where to Begin...

"God is good all the time...All the time God is good."

Praise Reports: Funeral Arrangements are set and there has been just nearly enough money collected from family members to make the payment on the services. PRAISE, PRAISE the Lord.

Deanna is doing better by her own report. She has had some very difficult days and tough decisions in the last 72 hours but it is good to visit with her and talk about the old days and laugh ourselves silly about our childhood.

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. ~ Proverbs 17:22 KJV

She is very thankful for all the prayers going up on her behalf as well as the generous support of her family. Please continue to pray for the visitation and memorial service tonight and tomorrow. Praise Him with us as well.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 4:6-7

Thank you Lord for my Man.

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.
~Psalms 33:20~

Our car on the other hand is still not running. But, hubs called a little while ago with what I knew would be a bloggable moment. He was almost breathless as he spoke. I would later realize this was excitement.

Hubs: Hey what are you doing...

Me: Just getting out of bed.

Hubs: Oh. I'm sorry.

Me: What are you doing?

Hubs: Just waiting on fleet to finish with my truck.

Me: What's wrong with your truck?

Hubs: Oh, the change oil light came on and it is about 2,000 miles overdue for an oil change. So they did that. Then they got to checking the lights on my truck and most of them were out so they are changing those, then they are going to change the windshield wipers and do a state inspect on it since it expires next month.

Me: [Thinking... This is so typical of my man I can hardly stand it. He lets things go until a big yellow warning light is flashing over his head!]

Hubs: So... I got to talking to the guys in fleet about the car and they said, not to quote them but it could just be this.... [part, don't remember what - something to do with the idle regulation though]...I'm looking at it in the O'Reillys catalog and it is a $40 part.

Me: Well that would be good, did they show you where it is?

Hubs: Yeah, well they tried to on my truck but it doesn't have one. They looked it up online and said it is either not working or it could be clogged. I might see if I can get in there myself and fix it.

Me: [Silent.]

I'm really never at a loss for words, but oh my goodness... He totally left me speechless. My husband never... did I say never... yes, never volunteers to fix our cars himself. He won't even change the oil. I think I might be beaming with pride over his motivation and ingenuity. I'm so shocked and excited all at the same time. I love my man.

In the meantime...we are driving my dad's truck (on it's last proverbial leg as well) but it is getting us here and there. So... Good news all around.

And if it is not the idle thingy then we have applied for a car loan and are going to get another vehicle - pretty much either way we're getting another vehicle... So please pray for favor, wisdom and necessity to rule over wants, desires and pride. It can go to our head you know.

Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you. ~ Psalm 116:7 (NIV)

Weighing the Word Postponed... Please Continue to Pray

With everything going on this week's Weighing the Word post is getting shuffled to next week. I just need to fast and pray today. I know that our family is undergoing an extreme period of testing right now - immediate and extended.

My cousin is having to make some tough decision regarding her finances and her husband's funeral this week. Her son is struggling with all of the Senior Year activities he is having to rearrange, cancel or make alternate plans to participate in this week. And this morning after we offered what we could to my cousin in support yesterday... The full weight of this week is upon us. We have housing payment due this coming week, my girls each have summer college tuition due by Sunday, and to top it off this morning the car is not running as it should be. This and we are just coming out of paying our taxes...

Oh, the joy of it all. (I'm really not being sarcastic... Last night I was telling my cousin we just have to trust God and His plan even when things don't look the way we think they should.... Talk about a test!) This is a test, this is only a test.

So, I'm enlisting my friends, my Sisters-in-"Arms" and my prayer warriors to go to battle for us this morning - Praying in Agreement. We are in desperate need of relief and an answer in so many ways.

Lord, we trust in You - the God who is Provision - and we surrender our own will and ideas of how this should work out to you. You alone are good and You alone have the solution to our problems to be sure. We believe that You will act, You will not delay and that Your provision will be sufficient to meet every need emotionally, spiritually, mentally and physically. That's just the kind of God You are and You always take care of Your own. Thank you for always hearing and answering our prayers, Lord God. We will trust in You. We will trust in You. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.

All have arrived safely...

Hey all...

Thanks so much for your prayers. Some have been answered while some are being answered even now and still some are left to be answered in the future. You have blessed us all.

The family has arrived back home safely and now the planning, arranging and preparing for our final goodbyes begins. Please pray for God's favor and blessing during this difficult time.

I just realized this nugget of truth: "When thinks don't make sense I have to trust God more. His plan is always to bring us good for His glory. I just have to remember that God sees things that I can't and He has never, ever failed me before." Never. He is with us now. Thanks again for praying. Love You All.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

My parents have traveled with my aunt and cousins to Midland to offer comfort and assistance to our family members who lost their husband and father yesterday. This morning I was getting an update from my father when he reported the youngest child seems to be doing better than expected. I reminded him that children grieve differently than adults. He laughed.

He said, "[The boy] was out in the yard area of the mobile home park playing football with a group of his friends yesterday when I went outside to see what they were doing. [The boy] introduced me as his 'cousin-uncle' and said, 'Cousin-uncle Ted which World War did you fight in again?'"

My father will be 70 years old this year which would make him not alive for the first world war and a small child during the second. My dad got so tickled by the young man's acuity to recognize anyone that old must have fought in a WORLD WAR. He is, after all, only in the second grade.

My daughters coined the term: COUSIN-UNCLE/AUNT to refer to my cousin (the sister-in-law to the man who passed away) as we are all very close. They got confused when introducing she and her husband to their friends so they began to call them "Cousin-Uncle and Cousin-Aunt." Now many in the family use the term in reference between our siblings and children... It is quite fun.

A bright spot in otherwise dark and sad moments to be sure.

Urgent Prayer Request

(I couldn't find a pic of Chaz, but this is from his racing circuit.)
**UPDATE** 8/31/08 11:05 PM: My daughter and I went to the hospital. Chaz has been awake on and off throughout the day. He started out calling his mother "Henry" and saying things like his last name was "Diez" and his father's last name was "Dirtwiggler."
However, this afternoon there was much improvement. He began to recognize and identify his family members and the doctor says that his CT Scans do not look much improved but Chaz physically and cognitively appears to be much improved.

This is a day to day situation still. He could relapse or suffer significant cognitive losses as a result of his injury. He is not in a drug-induced coma, but on heavy medication. He will be in teh hospital at least a week - but to God's glory he was taken to the #1 trauma center in North Texas.

His mom said he is definitely a miracle child. Prayers are working. The next three months are critical - he can do no physical activity AT ALL. Then they will retest and do a cognitive assessment at 6 months and that will be the long term prognosis. So - again, just as oft as you think of it please pray! It is all good news so far. He is on the road to recovery which is a great improvement from Last Night. Mom is concerned about breaking the news to him that they are selling his dirt bike and his motorcross career is officially over. She knows he will not be happy about that - especially with no memory of what has happened to him. His injury is called "Brain Sheering." Parts of his brain has stopped working - apparently.

I am supposed to take my other daughter and her friend back tomorrow. I will keep you all posted.

THANKS AGAIN - SO MUCH. LOVE YA'LL!
------------------------------------------------
Hey Blog Friends... I'm sending this out on the wire and asking you to pray for the Sims family.

The eldest child, Chaz, who is around 16 years old races motorcross and was involved in a serious accident. He has been hospitalized and is in a drug-induced coma. His injuries are apparently serious and numerous. His parents are Jim and Tami and his brother is Tanner. Please pray for complete healing, restoration and victory for this young man and his family.

After Justin died, Chaz would walk up to me at church and not say one word he would just give me the biggest hug. He and his family were very affected by my son's situation and Chaz has been a good friend to my youngest daughter.

I appreciate all your prayers. I will post an update as soon as I have more information.

Thanks again.

Inappropriately Funny Stuff!

Yesterday was not only the Fourth of July, but it is also a big family reunion day for my mother's side of the family. She has five living siblings and ten total. Plus add in all the children and grandchildren and great grandchildren and glory be... It is a festival ripe for some good story telling, good food and great fun... Not to mention an annual poker game that baits the young 'uns right in.

Okay... Poker aside. I had the best time playing with BEN... my one and a half year old nephew. Sweetie Pie. Watching the baby bop, Wyatt, my youngest nephew weighing in at 17 lbs and nearing 5 months and just laughing with my cousins.

Have you seen "The Bucket List"? Okay, if not - this shouldn't be too much of a spoiler, but one item of the Bucket List was "Laugh until I Cry..."

And yesterday, we did! Let me set the scene for you:

All the kiddoes (and the younger sets parents) were all awash after lunch in the chlorine goodness of the local swimming hole while the rest of us middle-aged folk were sittin' around the dinner table(s) yes... there was more than one. Most of us, who were not gambling, were steadily fighting sleep, when Cousin-Uncle Kevin, as he is lovingly called by my offspring, sits down amid a group of women discussing various aspects of life.

The cast includes: Aunt Jewel, Cousin-Aunt Sherry, Cousin Bev and her daughter Kimberly (AKA: K. K.) who is expecting first grandchild/child respectively and the soon-to-be notorious Cousin-Uncle Kevin, and later... Cousin Mark - Cousin Bev's dear husband.

Well the conversation goes something like this:

Cousin-Uncle Kevin: I often find myself drowning in estrogen. (Meaning he is often in the company of a lot of women being the only male.) As a matter of fact right now I'm swimming in a sea of estrogen. [He motions to the women sitting around him.] And, I need some floaties.

ME: [Thinks to myself, "I've already got some." In other words, most of the women at the table are genetically predisposed to be "top heavy."]

Cousin Bev: I already got mine.

LAUGHTER ERUPTS AROUND THE TABLE, Aunt Jewel blushes and pleads the fifth. Kevin sputters and hangs his head.

ME: I was thinking the same thing. [Hi Five's Cousin Bev.]

Cousin-Aunt Sherrry: My brain edits my thoughts before I speak them.

ME: Mine, too. But Bev said it for me.

Cousin Mark: [walks up and sits down] What's so funny?

Cousin-Uncle Kevin: Here's Mark, he understands what I'm talking about. You need some floaties, Mark?

ME: He already has some...

[More rolling on the floor laughter....]

ME: I can check off the "laughs until I cry" on my bucket list...

Inappropriately family funny... Shamelessly true.

More Grieving Families...

I learned over at the Siesta Fiesta blog that yet another prominent Christian music family is suffering the loss of a child. The loss is actually two - The band is Selah, and Nicol Sponberg's son died in his sleep this week and his visitation and memorial service will be tomorrow. Please be in prayer for them. The story deepens the grief. Apparently within recent weeks this family sufferred yet another loss. Todd Smith, Nicol's brother, and his wife's baby Audrey Caroline died as well.

I can imagine what they are going through within a month of us burying Justin, my cousin's newborn baby was delivered premature and died within hours of her birth. It is hard enough to bury one child in a family, but to feel the onslaught of death leveled against your children in so short a time... It is overwhelming. Please be in prayer for this family as well as the SCC family and their loss of Maria. I know God has a plan and He is working in all of these situations to bring glory to Himself and good to these families and His children as a whole.

Please specifically pray for the breaking of any assignment the enemy has leveled against the children of God's beloved Church. That death is not God's will for these children, He has a plan for them with a future and a hope. I pray that each child who is born to a family of the body of Christ would be protected and delivered to a long, prosperous and glorious generation of Spirit-Filled, united believers in Jesus Christ. In His glorious Name, I pray!

You can read more about Audrey and Luke HERE.

A Young Life... A Huge Testimony

To God Be The Glory! And in the words of Caleb Chapman, "Jesus is real." He shared how he prayed for God to heal little Maria after the accident at her memorial service, and though he doesn't like the way God did it, she is healed. But, even more than that - Jesus is real. Read on... the memorial service is shared with us through Jim House, the manager for SCC.

Read about it here: Maria's Memorial Service

Blessings.

Please Pray for Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman and their family.

Please lift up this family who has so ministered to us as their lives and his music have witnessed Christ in so many ways. You may got to Steven Curtis Chapman's website to leave condolensces. I am praying 1 Thessalonians 4 for the Chapmans tonight:

"13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words." - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NKJV)

Update: The Celebration for Baby Dylan

To read more about what happened to this little girl go here:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The funeral was not a funeral. This family asked God to move heaven and earth to celebrate their baby's birthday with her there. A man at a local funeral home cut through all the red tape, got the child's body late Friday afternoon and had her looking like a precious baby doll in that small pink lined casket.
.
Her hair was in dog ears and she looked as if she were sleeping. Beside her her favorite baby doll lay with a bottle in it's mouth and a small book, because she loved to be read to. "Read it again!" was the common request. One pastor shared that his picture of Dylan in heaven is her sitting on Jesus' lap and he's just read a book to her and she just keeps repeating, "Read it again." He said if you pan out, there are books scattered all about our Savior's feet. The parents led the atmosphere by praising and worshipping God in both Word and through physical praise. It was so precious to see them bowing at the casket as they sang worship to the Lord. Love and joy were expressed over and over again, we sang "Happy Birthday" and then a pastor from our church who has surrendered two children to the Lord gave a heart felt message about what we could learn from Dylan's life: 1. He said we could learn Joy because that is what her life was marked with, 2. He said we could learn that life is precious because we are not guaranteed time, 3. He said we could learn to view life from God's perspective - asking's what is a long and full life from His position?
.
They opened the floor for a time of prayer and encouragement from the crowd - and many spoke. Then the parents rose a spoke. The expression of the mother was that the Lord should be glorified and though she is hurting through her own personal tragedy - He is always worthy to be praised and that is what she would do. The father admitted he didn't feel strong, that at times his wife had to help him pull himself together - but, they each reflected on what this baby brought to their lives and how they would remember her, that they were having a celebration of her life rather than a funeral for her death. It was beautiful. The father concluded with a list of things he is experiencing - especially after losing himself emotionally yesterday morning. He said he taught Dylan her ABCs by saying demonstratively that "A is for..." So he shared what he is experiencing through the alphabet, "A is for anger. The anger I feel, I am angry with God. But, I praise and worship Him anyway. A is for the affection He gives me instead." He went through the entire alphabet that way. It was so precious and raw. They prayed over the group present and then we met. It was again, a precious celebration of a dearly loved little girl.
.
The newspaper ran an opinion poll on the trouble "lurking in backyards" and opened the floor up for discussion - there were those who made the accusation that this mother neglected her duty by allowing an older sibling to supervise her child while playing outside. It is bound to happen, but one precious pastor said the Lord gave him a word for them, "You are good parents."
.
Anyway, that is all I have - I was so blessed by the experience. I pray you all are be the recounting.
Blessings and thank you for praying. Please continue even if you do not post it hear.

Tragedy Strikes - Please Pray...

Dear Friends,

My heart is so grieved as a young family is grieving the death of their 23 month old daughter tonight. She fell into the family pool around four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Her mother found her and pulled her out, but she was unresponsive when the paramedics arrived. She died around 9:20 last night. The family is a member of my church and the funeral is going to be tomorrow evening. Will you please remember this young family in your prayers? It is so devestating. Pray for those who will come. They are expecting 600-1200 people to attend.

Anyway, that is all I have tonight. I as the Psalmist said, am sure I will once again see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Blesssings dear one.
