Tuesday's In Other Words: Do Justice, Love Mercy

“A pharisee is hard on others and easy on himself,

but a spiritual man is easy on others and hard on himself.”

by A.W.Tozer

I am growing to LOVE A. W. Tozer and his concise, rich writings and teachings on the Christian journey. This reminds me of a song that Big Daddy Weave sings called Pharisee. I guess maybe this hit a cord in me because I am dealing with laying down judgmental attitudes that I developed over the years. Not judgments against others so much... God really has shown me that people in glass houses should NEVER. THROW. STONES. Because, of course, you never know when you might get it back.

I wrote a devotion for my curriculum about Embracing Grace that often times I will hear Christian leadership be critical of others and in so doing they are really sinning themselves by passing judgment on the circumstance of another. It doesn't prompt me to boycott their program, it prompts me to pray for their heart. To ask God why they are doing what they do, and how it is that people devoted to His Word could get so tied up in "doing" the law they miss the grace of God that is at its heart. The point I made in the devotion is that God set at work in the law His grace, not just by offering His Son in final atonement... But also in the fact that the observance of the law exemplified the grace of God at work in our own lives. Think of it - the first four commandments are the mark of devotion and love for God and the last six express His heart for mankind. Grace at work in the Law. We don't live under separate covenants - it is all one covenant with two parts. We don't live under grace and exclude the law anymore than we are to live under the law and exclude grace. They are not mutually exclusive, but were always purposed together to express the heart of God toward His people.

Now... I guess at this point I should say this - the reason for keeping the law is to keep ourselves lined up with God both in priniciple and deed.

Micah 6 tells us we are to "DO" justice and "LOVE" mercy. I think this pretty much sums it up for me. Doing justice means I do what is right, but loving mercy means that I extend grace to others.

Does this mean that I condone sin? NO! But, it doesn't mean I can willy nilly go around policing the lives of others based on my understanding of the Word of God. If someone has not given me permission to speak into their life, am I truly honoring God by beating them down with His Word?

Truth. I must carefully weigh the value. Case in point. My brothers and I were raised by honorable, Christian parents. I do not wish to dishonor them in any way. They were no more flawed or perfect than anyone else's parents both having backgrounds steeped in good moral values and skewed perceptions of the church and its role in the Christian walk. I spent much of my life passing judgment on their parenting by rebelling against it while my brother a year younger towed the line, did as much as he could to please them and seldom took up offenses on behalf of either of my parents.

After I began attending church in my late 20s I discovered that I had been pious, self-righteous and indignant toward my mother whom I blamed for nearly every trouble I had. I had to forgive her, accept her limitations and surrender her to God in prayer in order to find peace. Laying down any wound I felt was her responsibility and living with her in Paul's words, "As far as it depends on me, live at peace with all men."

Only more recently have I let go of the heavy wounds that I held against my father. Not because he was less deserving, but because those wounds did not add the strain to our relationship that the mother wounds had left in my relationship with my mom.

A few years back, my brother went through Christian counseling where he apparently was encouraged to confess any bitterness he harbored against others, especially in his family. He did so with my mother and me. It seemed that neither mother nor I anticipated, expected nor understood what he was trying to accomplish because the offenses he confessed did little more than insight hurt feelings and more offenses because we did not know what the point of the confession was. I totally missed he was asking for forgiveness and felt very judged and I am guessing my mother felt the same. Not... To dishonor my brother - he was only working through his own brand of misery and difficulties... It just turned into a big mess. One I would gather he did not intend to create.

The truth is, we all live in this human condition and have skewed motives and value systems based on a fallen existence. However, when rightly submitted to God - we have the power to forgive, to grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and extend kindness and grace to others even when we ourselves feel they do nto deserve it. Why?

Because Jesus Himself did the very same thing on our behalf more than 2,000 years ago and to not do so would be denying His sacrifice, His love and His grace at work in our own lives.

Do Justice and Love Mercy... Perhaps I talked all around it this morning and missed the point of my own post. Or perhaps somewhere in this jumbled mess of thoughts and feelings is a message about God's heart that I have been learning and walking through the last 10 years. Either way I pray you are blessed and able to gleen from the mumblings of this humble servant. Be Blessed.

QUOTE OF THE DAy

Hey Ya'll! I logged into my Gmail and this quote was at the top:

"Fortune favors the prepared mind." Louis Pastuer

Well, I should be making a fortune any minute now! LOL!

Really, I have been preparing for my class tonight by walking through my lesson and the power point and just praying over some of it. So if fortune favors the prepared mind (or soul) then I should find this evening to be a double blessing all around.

Now, I am off to do my roots and dig into Bible Study of another fashion!

Blessings and have a great day!

Jehovah Jireh Revisited....

With our recent weeks of financial crisis and stock market down turn - I am praying that this post falls fresh on you... Next week or maybe even this weekend I will post about Shophet meaning "Judge." He is the provision for us, we have nothing to fear for our hope is in the Lord.

REFERENCE 3068 - Yehowah: The covenant name of God most prominently known in connection with His relationship with the nation of Israel; also known as the Tetragrammaton. It was never pronounced by the Jews who generally substituted synonyms such as ʾadhōnāy (136). The name is found with reference to God's dealings with men before the flood (Genesis 2:4, 5; 6:3), during the patriarchal period (Genesis 15;1; 27:7; 49:18), as well as during the period of the Law (Exodus 20:2, Deuteronomy 6:4).
.
REFERENCE 7200 - Rāʾah: to see; to see intelectually (Job 3:16 [cf. 33:28]), to look; to look at, view, inspect, regard; to perceive (Deuteronomy 4:28; in the sense of hearing, (Genesis 2:19); to feel; to experience (Jeremiah 5:12); to understand; to learn; to live to see; to enjoy (Isaiah 44:16); to show oneself, appear, reveal oneself; to show; to ascertain (Genesis 16:4), to verify (Genesis 26:28); to make one feel or know; to cause to enjoy; to gain understanding (Isaiah 52:15); to be fully aware (in life, Job 4:8); to have a position of trust (2 Kings 25:19); to examine, investigate (Genesis 11:5); to supervise (Genesis 39:23); to attend to (2 Samuel 13:5); to select Genesis 41:33); to observe; to imitate (Judges 7:17); to discover (Judges 16:5). See the Greek horáō (Greek 3708 NT). The Qal participle means seer, prophet, vision, oracle. According to 1 Samuel 9:9ff., this word had been used from ancient times. It is applied to Samuel (1 Chronicles 9:22; 26:28; 29:29) and other prophets (2 Chronicles 16:7, 10). The three words for the functional prophet are found in 1 Chronicles 29:29: rōʾeh (Hebrew 7203), nāvīʾ (Hebrew 5030), chōzeh (Hebrew 2374). "Seer" communicates the means by which a prophet communicates with God, the means by which the revelation was received (1 Samuel 9:9) in relationship to vision (Isaiah 27:8). Rōʾeh is the alternative term for nāvīʾ. Nāvīʾ stressed the objective or active work of the messenger og the Lord in speaking God's Word.
----------------------------------
Wilson's Old Testament Word Studies, Hendrickson's Publishers includes this definition:
.
Jehovah, a name applied to God, and rendered LORD in our version, seems to have an especial reference to the purpose of redemption revealed to our first parents after the fall. The promise that "the seed of the woman should bruise the serpant's head" led to the expectation of a Redeemer to come. Eve gave expression to her faith in this promise on the birth of her first-born in saying, "I have gotten a man Jehovah," using the future tense of the verb (to be), Jahveh, or Jehovah; which term became the name used by the Church in future ages of their hope in the promised Saviour. Jehovah in the [Septuagint] is rendered Κύριος, the title subsequently used of Christ in the New Testament; Jireh, to look; to look out anything for oneself, to provide, to choose.
------------------------
.
NOTE: We will be looking at Jehovah next week, and studying mostly from the Strong's and Vine's.
.
Vine's definition for See (to), Perceive is:
.
verb: rāʾah - (7200) - to see, observe, perceive, get acquainted with, gain understanding, examine, look after (see to), choose, discover." This verb occurs only in Moabite and all periods of Hebrew. It appears in the Bible 1,300 times.
.
Basically rāʾah conotes seeing with one's eyes: Isaac's "eyes were dim, so that he could not see" (Genesis 27:1). This is its meaning in Genesis 1:4, its first biblical appearance. The word can be used in the sense of seeing only what is obvious: "... For the Lord seeth not as a man seeth..." (1 Samuel 16:7). this verb can also mean "to observe": "...And there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women that beheld while Samson made sport" (Judges 16:27). The second primary meaning is "to perceive," or to be consciously aware of - so "idols neither see, nor hear" (Deuteronomy 4:28). Third, rāʾah can represent perception in the sense of hearing something - God brought the animals before Adam "to see what he would call them" (Genesis 2:19). In Isaiah 44:16, the verb means "to enjoy: "...I am warm, I have seen the fire." It can also mean "to realize" or "to get acquainted with": "When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth..." (Ecclessiastes 8:16). The rebellious men of Jerusalem tell God they will not "see sword nor famine"; they will not experience it (Jeremiah 5:12).
.
This definition goes on to say that the word can also mean to know intuitively, to experience, or to see intellectually in the sense of living.
------------------------------------------
.
I want us to take the time today to seriously peruse all the definitions. While we have been taught that Jehovah Jireh means "the Lord will Provide" it can mean so much more to us if we stop looking at it as a provisional statement and begin to look at it as a relational statement. As we view the verses today, please take the time to relate to God.
.
I also want to make the point that in the Hebrew transations that I consulted, the term yireh is specifically related to the fact that God is seen by Abraham. It is the seeing that is important, the perception of God that Abraham came away with. I evaluated copies of the Pentateuch and the entire translation of the Hebrew text for the Old Testament in two different translations found that the translation was the same, the terms Yireh or Jireh indicates that the Lord is seen, not an emphasis on the provision but the Lord who is seen through it. That is why Abraham called that mountain - On the mountain of the Lord, He will be seen. (loose paraphrase)
.
The Bible Knowleged Commentary - Old Testament, Walvoord and Zuck, Victor Books has this to say:
----------------------------------------------
22:9-14. God's intervention - so dramatic and instructive - showed that He never had intended for Abraham to go through with the sacrifice (child sacrifice was not be practiced in Israel) but that it indeed was a test. The Angel of the Lord... stopped Abraham just as the patriarch took in his hand the knife to slay Isaac! Now God knew that Abraham would hold nothing back and that he did in fact fear God. To fear God means to reverence Him as sovereign, trust Him implicitly, and obey Him without question.
.
A true worshipper of God holds nothing back from God but obediently gives Him what He asks, trusting that He will provide. The key idea of the entire passage is summarized in the name Abraham gave to the place: YHWH Yir'eh, the Lord will provide (or, "see"; v. 14). The explanation is, On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided (or, "seen," yērāʾeh, v. 14; cf. v.8). This is the basis of the truth often repeated in the Old Testament: The Lord was to be worshipped in His holy mountain by the nation. "Three times a year all the men [of Israel] are to appear [yērāʾeh, "be seen"] before the Sovereign LORD" to worship Him, bringing Him their offerings and sacrifices (Exodus 23:17; cf. Deuteronomy 16:16). The Lord would see (rāʾah) the needs of those who came before Him, and would meet their needs. Thus in providing for them He would be "seen."
-------------------------------------------------
.
Okay...now we have taken in a lot of INFORMATION! So, just breathe and think. If you need to come back to this after reflecting on it a while, do it. I know I must. Ask God what He wants you to see about Him, let's stop right here and pray.
.
Lord, show us who you are through this study. Reveal yourself to us as the God who sees our needs and meets them. Be personal with us, be real and fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we may have Spiritual eyes to see and spiritual ears to hear and may gain wisdom as well as understanding. You are our God and we love You. We ask You to bless us with Your presence today. In Jesus Name I pray all that I have asked for... may Your will be done in our lives. Amen.
.
Now, let's look at the context of the one time Jehovah Jireh appears in Scripture: Genesis 22:14. READ Genesis 22:9-14. Abraham is being tested by God. He has been told to take his son to a place God would show him and there sacrifice the child of promise, Isaac. Imagine the angst of Abraham as his flesh warred with what he knew about God. If God indeed was requiring him to sacrifice Isaac, then Abraham trusted God would provide a better way. Just what he had done when he released Ishmael and his mother to the desert only a chapter earlier in this saga. On the journey, Isaac is aware they are going to honor the Lord in sacrifice, he just has no idea that he is the intended sacrificial offering. I love what the Bible Knowledge Commentary says, "He never intended for Abraham to go through with the sacrifice." In other words, God wanted to know if Abraham believed God because He was God or because he had been given Isaac. In our lives, do we trust God because of what we have received from Him or because of who He is? Provision or Relationship?
.
Let this test of faith settle on you a moment. Abraham and Sarah longed for children all their lives. Then God delivers a magnanimous promise for delivering to them a child, a seed of many nations, they initially try to help God out, but in His wisdom, God finally makes good and Sarah, in her old age, gives birth to Isaac: A precious child of promise. They have what they longed for, prayed for... believed God for - now they are going to treasure this child, raise him up and they are going to teach him about God so he can carry out the promise God has placed over his life. In this portion of Abraham's journey God is asking Abraham to trust Him completely without reservation. Do you trust God completely without reservation?
.
In my own life I had to learn to where my son was concerned. In the final year of his life - nothing was making sense, my prayer requests did not add up to my reality and then in May, 2005, I received the impression that I was about to lose my son. It was as if God was saying, "It's coming. You cannot change it, but will you trust me anyways? Will you stand on my promises even in the very circumstances that frighten you the most? Will you love me in spite of what you see, feel, touch or understand?" I had to cry out yes, to thank Him in the midst of suffering and know that the God I worshipped was bigger than the devestating loss I may have to face. And I did: I praised Him, I believed Him and I cried out to Him - I trusted Him beyond my reality. I testify today, without my relationship and close intimacy with God, I could never have walked through this season of my life. Living out the worst confessed fears of my adult life: outliving one of my children. Our God is faithful. Abraham knew that and he trusted God in spite of the reality that he was about to face.
.
Now let's look at how this name of God is evidenced in other passages of Scripture:
.
READ Deuteronomy 15:4-6 (AMP) "But there will be no poor among you, for the Lord will surely bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance to possess, 5 If only you carefully listen to the voice of the Lord your God, to do watchfully all these commandments which I command you this day. 6 When the Lord your God blesses you as He promised you, then you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you."
.
Okay, consider how this fits into the definitions we have learned today. Jehovah Jireh is a term derived from two words: Jehovah - the covenant name of God, revered by the Jews. It was a name that signified a personal relationship and connection to God. And Ra'ah. Ra'ah indicates vision, seeing or perception. He is our God who sees to our every need. He anticipates them, sees us in our need and makes provision to meet it. Under what Conditions? "If only you carefully listen to the voice of the Lord your God (relationship), and do watchfully all these commandments (obedience)." God does not want our allegiance because we appreciate what He does for us, He wants a loyalty from His children born out of blind trust and relationship. He does not want us to observe the Law without basking ourselves in His glorious love. He wants our obedience to be a natural response to our devotion to Him. His provision is there - He provides for all that inhabit the earth, but special blessings await those who come into relationship with Him, allow His Word to penetrate their hearts and consume their minds and flow from their lives in obedience, trust and love. God is a benevolent, giving God. He sacrificed everything for our sakes, He promises blessings beyond measure - but, we have to be tuned into His voice and living our lives reflecting the relationship we have with Him for it to bring Him glory. The evidence of God's provision makes Him seen. (Bible Knowledge Commentary.)
.
READ John 1:29 (AMP) "The next day John saw Jesus coming to him and said, Look, there is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" [Exodus 12:3, Isaiah 53:7]
.
God as the provider who sees and meets all our needs. In the passage from Genesis 22, God provided a substitutionary sacrifice to take Isaac's place - a ram. The sacrifice represented the coming Messiah who would make the final sacrifice once and for all. Until Jesus' death on the cross, substitutionary atonement had to be made. Unblemished lambs and others livestock were sacrificed to redeem the unclean and to atone for sin. Think of that... When John made this statement he was saying, "Look, this is the man our fathers and our father's fathers have been waiting for... God's provision is here, the Lamb is provided to atone for our sins completely." Once and for all - the price was paid. Jesus made the way for all who will come to Him and acknowledge Him as God's provision for our sins. Again, what does it require to receive this provision - entering into a relationship with Him, listening for His voice and submitting our lives to Him out of love and gratitude for the grace He offered. We have only to receive it. Look up Exodus 12:3 - this is the account of the Passover. The lamb slain so that death would pass over the house of Israel when the plague of the Firstborn swept through Egypt. A sacrifice provided to spare the lives of God's children. That is who Christ came to be for us, provision for redemption. Think of this: the plague of the Firstborn brought death to all of Egypt's firstborn children. Adam's sin brought death to all who were born to God's firstborn of mankind. Yet Jesus came as Mary's firstborn to be the "Firstborn" [to God and] "of many brothers [us]..." Romans 8:29 (emphasis mine). Think that over... Jesus is God's provision that we may be His brothers. GLORY!!! Glory, she cried... All the Way HOME!
.
READ 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (AMP) "Therefore let anyone who thinks he stands [who feels sure that he has a steadfast mind and is standing firm], take heed lest he fall [into sin]. 13 For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not adjusted and adapted and belonging to human experience and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He[can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] provide the way out (the means of escape to a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently."
.
Are you taking and soaking all of that into your sweet spirit, one of the most dangerous conditions of the Christian existence is our tendancy to become prideful in our walk with the Lord. We walk in obedience, we learn His ways and then we gain confidence not in Him, but in ourselves. Think of that - this passage in verse 12 is a warning - those who believe they have their feet planted on firm ground - solid rock actually- must still be careful. Why? Because the mighty fall, that's why. Proverbs warns us that Pride goes before the fall, and when our confidence is in what we have done to earn God's favor over what God does to get us out of our pit of sin then we run the risk of not only falling ourselves but taking a few others down with us as we go. Temptation comes to all, no one is spared. Jesus was tempted in the desert - He had to cry out to God in the Garden of Gethsemane to gain strength to face the agonizing death of crucifixion. When we are tempted we must turn to God, rely on Him as the provision for our times of trial and trouble. We cannot rely wholly on our own understanding or track record, we must continually be renewing our mind with the provision of His Word and trusting in the provision of His sacrifice - believing Him for grace to endure the deepest trouble and love to overcome any sorrow. God is our source, our provider - everything is filtered through His hand of grace. He provides the way of escape, but we must be patient to watch for the opening to follow His lead.
.
-----------------------------------
Provision is not a problem for God. He wants to restore His provision to us, but that will not come apart from a trusting relationship where we seek intimacy and obedience as true worshippers who come before Him in reverence and humility desiring that the Lord will be revealed through the provision He has made in our lives. "Then it shall be to Me a name of joy, a praise, and an honor before all nations of the earth, who shall hear all the good that I do to them; they shall fear and temble for the goodness and all the prosperity that I provide for it." Jeremiah 33:9 NKJV
.
Do we trust in God for the things in our lives or for who He is? How is our faith when He asks us to sacrifice, to give up for His sake? What happens when the trouble comes - when we run out of money before month... how do we spend what He provides and what does it reflect back to Him? Have we taken provision for granted and do we approach the Throne of Grace with an attitude of entitlement rather than an attitude of gratitude?
.
Today as we close, I want to show you a glimpse of the provision God has made for us in Christ. Read through these Scriptures as you Weigh the Word today and note the ways that God has met our need by example in Jesus Christ.
.
From the New King James Version

Hebrews
Chapter 2
We must guard against inattention and neglect of God's message through His Son
-----------------------------------------------
1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
.
2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,
.
3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
.
4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
.
5 For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels.
.
6 But one testified in a certain place, saying: "What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him?
.
7 You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands.
.
8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet." For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.
.
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
.
10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
.
11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
.
12 saying: "I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You."
.
13 And again: "I will put My trust in Him." And again: "Here am I and the children whom God has given Me."
.
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
.
15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham.
.
17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
.
18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
------------------------------------
.
Hebrews 7:25 "Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them."
------------------------------------
.
Romans 8:27 "Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."
-------------------------------------
.
Luke 22:31 "And the Lord said, 'Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.'"
________________________________________
When we begin to see everything in our lives from the perspective of God's provision, we begin to recognize how vast and how imcomparable our God truly is. All His answers are Yes and Amen in Jesus Christ. Whatever your need is, Jesus came to meet it - to free you from it and to show you that God is about more than the things He provides, He is the provision Himself.
.
(Whew! YOU MADE IT! This was intense today! I pray you were blessed indeed!)

Compare and Contrast

Remember in high school (or maybe for some college) when we were assigned the task of writing a comparison or a contrast paper about works of literature or an article. Well today, in the span of a few hours I saw two movies with the theme of marriage and divorce. Two movies. One had me weeping, the other made me want to vomit. I'll explain why later.

**SPOILER ALERT*****SPOILER ALERT**

****************************************

Here is the trailer for Nights in Rodanthe a movie based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks (Who is... One of my favorite secular authors, though the light is fading --- I have not read one of his books in years, and remember NOT reading this one because the subject matter troubled me.) The movie is out on the WB name and stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane - actors and actresses I typically enjoy seeing in film.

The second movie is a low budget, inspirational film called Fireproof based on a screenplay that is now a book written by the Kendrick Brothers of Sherwood Baptist Church in Georgia. These are the same brothers who wrote, produced, directed and distributed Flywheel and Facing the Giants AND their cast and crew are largely made up of volunteers. To tell you my favorite part of these movies is the CREDITS!

Did I say Credits?

Yes, I said "CREDITS!"

Why?

The credits include a host of Sherwood and Georgia's elite volunteer cast and crew members. I love watching all the names roll by. There are those who provided food... Name after name of individuals and families, Sunday school classes and churches, grocery stores.. (In "Facing the Giants" Piggly Wiggly* was recognized!) But, when all the credits have rolled and the names of everyone who contributed to the movie have been acknowledged the screen goes completely black as these words rise upon the screen: "TO GOD BE THE GLORY."

So... I. LOVE. THE. CREDITS. Did I say that already? Oh yeah. Well I do.

So here is the trailer for the movie Fireproof:

So, by comparison which movie was better? The million dollar blockbuster... glitzy, romantically set "Nights in Rodanthe" set off the coasts of North Carolina at a beach front Bed and Breakfast in the middle of a hurricane based on a best selling author's book. OR the low budget, relative new comer to the movie magic scene Sherwood Pictures' "Fireproof."

Well, by comparison... Hands down I would give Nights in Rodanthe a paltry two stars with a star and a half being given for the stars in the film and the author of the novel. The rest is the substance of the movie... 1/2 star.

On the other hand, Fireproof gets FIVE. STARS. FIVE. I am going to tell you the movie had everything, romance, a thrilling auto accident scene where it is life and death, man versus machine... And I won't spoil it but the trailer gives clues... It is intense. Kirk Cameron has really grown up from his "Growing Pains" starts and is remarkably believable in the role of Caleb Holt. That cocky "Mike Seaver" attitude shows just a little in his swagger and style at the beginning but at some point it seems this movie moves from acting to reality as the characters develop and the storyline captures your heart.

Fireproof has humor, a hilarious one upmanship scene at the firehouse makes you laugh and laugh and Caleb Holt redefines the game, "Kick the Can."

But, the heart of Fireproof is what makes it so beautiful. The heart of the movie is a failing marriage, a wounded wife and a clueless husband... enter the LOVE DARE. Yes, the LOVE DARE. A tool, which is a personally written journal that Caleb's father gives him when he admits his marriage is headed for the local family court. Through this personal journal that is actually a 40 day challenge to demonstrate the unconditional quality of true love as described in 1 Corinthians 13, Caleb learns not only to love his wife with a new heart and saves his marriage, but he also learns to trust God and accepts Jesus as His Lord and Savior. That scene was simply beautiful.

Caleb's wife, Catherine, grew up a firefighter's daughter and longed to marry someone just like Daddy. A hero. But, her husband turned out to be a hero to everyone but her. She is aching for attention and absolutely washed up done with her husband when the movie begins. In an intensely emotional scene, Caleb and Catherine have it out and she says, "I want out."

The rest of the movie is a dance... much like the tango where he woos her and she resists. Until a smashing ending that makes you long for this kind of movie ending every single time. The movie is superbly acted with Kirk Cameron being the only professional actor in the bunch. He is greatly upstaged by Catherine's portrayer and the man who plays his father along with his firefighter friends who gag and gaffaw through the entire movie. There are some heavy scenes related to the job of a firefighter and the entire time you forget you are watching a ministry project from a church in Georgia. The better filmography may be due, in part, to the professional filming crew tht was hired for this project, but HEY! It makes it work. It is filmed entirely on location in Albany, Georgia and a few familiar faces from Flywheel and Facing the Giants turn up in this very tasteful, message film with a meaning and a song. God's song for marriage. I won't spoil the end because I want you to see it. But, this beautifully written, well played movie is in theaters across the country. It opened with the #1 rating on Fandango in pre-sales and in the #2 spot last Friday night (9/26/2008) in total sales. It finished the weekend out at #4 in box office sales for the entire opening weekend up against Shai Lebouf in Eagle Eye. $6.2 million in the first weekend, compared to $10 million that it's predecessor Facing the Giants grossed in Sherwood's National Debut. I would pay to see it again.

By the way, the Love Dare (written by the Kendrick Brothers) has been published by Broadman Holman and is avaiable at Lifeway and through the Fireproof website.

As for Nights in Rodanthe, my daughters picked it for our movie night. Both were bored and found the movie dragging along like I was. I was disappointed to be honest. The movie and storyline were self serving and gratuitous at best. This is supposed to be a love story to end all love stories, but it just didn't work for me. Set in the town of Rodanthe, NC at a B&B as previously mentioned. It is the story of a woman who is helping out her friend for the weekend while her kids travel to Orlando with their father, who is estranged from the family due to an affair he had.

Admittedly, any reserve the woman, Adrienne, had might be justified with regard to her philandering husband, but after watching Fireproof, I'm not rooting for the mysterious troubled stranger, Dr. Flanner, who comes to town - I'm rooting for Jack, her husband.

But, when Jack comes to pick up the kids for the Orlando trip, he tells his wife he's made a mistake and he wants to come home. He realizes what he's lost and he wants another chance. She should come to Orlando with them so they can be a family. She refuses, siting her committment to help her friend for the weekend. So, she spends the weekend catering the lone hotel guest at the B&B. She cooks him meals, chats with him over a bottle of wine after dinner... She later introduces him to the paintings of her friend, Jean, whose grandmother came to America as black woman in post slavery society. The paintings in the B&B attic are of "spirit gods" the black woman's ancestors worshipped.

We do learn that the mysterious Paul is actually a doctor who lost a patient on the operating table and has come to make peace with the family who live in Rodanthe. He is divorced and homeless, heading for Equador to reconcile himself to his estranged son who runs a clinic there. James Franco plays Dr. Paul's son.

So for four lo-o-ong days which involves both of them having a fit of anger over things not going as they planned... involving drinking and adultery during the hurricane and her going from considering reconciling with her husband to waiting for this stranger she spent four days with to return from Equador. The scene of her making the choice to end her marriage and sharing that with her children was not only painful - it made me not like Adrienne much. Maybe that is because I saw a bit of the old me in her. Saying "I have to do this for me. My kids may hurt but they will get over it, I deserve to be happy."

Please don't misunderstand me, I am not saying that an affair is not grievous and worthy of ending a marriage. But, when there is repentance and there is an offer to reconcile - especially in cases where children are involved - I am of the mindset that the only answer is to try to make it work before jumping in bed with the first man who comes to town with knowing eyes and a whimsical smile. Come on, It's Richard Gere. This movie could have ended sooner. It was just too painful for me to watch as I cried out in my head, "You don't know what you are doing to your kids. "

God has a plan for marriage and families! He has a glorious plan and that is whyI will see Fireproof again before its run in theaters is over and I will not be recommending Nights in Rodanthe to anyone this fall.

El Chay - The Living God

My soul yearns, yes, even pines and is homesick for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out and sing for joy to the living God.
Psalms 84:2 (AMP)
.
In her book, Praying the Names of God, Ann Spangler writes, "This title sets Israel's God apart from the false gods of the surrounding nations. Unlike idols of wood and stone, made by human hands, the Living God is himself Maker of heaven and earth. He alone is the source of life. We live because he lives." (p. 228)
.
She further explains this attribute of our God in this way: "Scripture constantly warns against the worship of false gods. The first of the then commandments is itself a proscription against idol worship. The title El Chay, the Living God, empahsize's god's role as Creator of all that is, in contrast with idols made of metal, wood, or stone, which are merely the creations of human hands." (p. 230)
.
From Strong's Hebrew and Greek Dictionary we find this definition:
.
El - See my post on El as the name of God we studied here. (Strong's Number 410)
.

(chayah); alive; hence raw (flesh); fresh (plant, water, year), strong; also (as noun, especially in the feminine singular and masculine plural) life (or living thing), whether literal or figurative :- + age, alive, appetite, (wild) beast, company, congregation, life (-time), live (-ly), living (creature, thing), maintenance, + merry, multitude, + (be) old, quick, raw, running, springing, troop.—Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary
------------------------------------------------
From the Lexical Aids of the Old Testament, Complete Word Study Old Testament (AMG Publishers):
2416. Chay; this adj. come from chāyāh (2421). Some of its meanings are: living, alive, have life, remain alive, sustain life, live prosperously, live forever, be quickened, revive from sickness, discouragement, or even death; vigorous; fresh, running (water); by the life of, as one lives (as used in oaths and exclamations), livelihood, life, refreshment. The OT places a high value on life and views it as being good. It came from God (Gen. 2:7), but death ensued because of sin. Man was no longer allowed to partake of the tree of life (Gen. 3:22). God is the Source of life (Ps. 36:9, 129:13ff.) and the Lord of life and death (Job 12:10). Chay is a set of experiences, not an abstract principal of vitality which is separate from the body. The Hebrews viewed man holistically, i.e. body, mind [soul, empahsis mine] and spirit were a unified whole. Life was associated with health, prosperity, vitality, etc., while death was the very opposite.
---------------------------------------------
In the Bible Knowledge Commentary Old Testament (Victor Books), (p. 821)
.
(36:8) Moreover, Eden and Creation are suffested in the next blessings - drink for the river of delights ("delights" is "Eden" in Heb.), and life and light (i.e., understanding, joy, and life) come from God, their Source. So in contrast with the corruptions of the wicked, and obedient believer's life is characterized by security int he Lord, abundant provisioins, life, and understanding in God's presence.
----------------------------------------------
Now to our Scriptures:
.
But the LORD is the true God;
he is the living God, the eternal King.
Jeremiah 10:10a (NIV)
Our living, true, eternal God. He is the source of life, the very breath we breathe and the heartbeat that vibrantly pounds out each footstep, each heartache and each moment of our lives. He is eternal - the source of life, all life is eternal. In Genesis, as we watch the creation of the world unfold one by one, God created and breathes life into each of the living creatures. He crowns His creation with the man and his bride - we are the crown of creation - the finishing touch of life as God created it on earth. He is our source of life, if we are breathing we have a purpose given to us by the Creator of Heaven and Earth.
.
"I issue a decree that in every
part of my kingdom
people must fear and
reverence the God of Daniel.
"For he is the living God
and he endures forever;
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end."
Daniel 6:26 (NIV)
Even pagan kings saw the Living God's hand upon His people. As Daniel was sent into the Lion's Den to be slain, the Living God came and shut up the Lion's mouth. When King Darius returned and found Daniel alive, He declared Daniel's God the Living God, the God who endures forever whose Kingdom will not be destroyed and whose dominion will never end. The God who not only gives life, but preserves and prospers life even in times of great peril. He proves Himself, El Chay, the Living God.
.
"Jesus replied, 'Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? 27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!'" Mark 12:24-37 (NIV)
.
Here Jesus is answering the Saducees who question Him about life after the resurrection. He tells them, you read the Scriptures and are learned in "Spiritual" matters, but you concern yourself with temporary conditions. Marriage is not necessary once we are raptured up in the resurrection of the dead. It is not necessary because as a whole, we are the Bride of Christ... We will serve one husband, be united with our Bridegroom - Jesus Christ. He is not the God of the dead, but the living. We are mistaken if we think these earthly concerns and temporary things we contend with on earth are all there is to life. Tonight at my group for bereaved mothers we were talking about our children and one of the mothers looked at pictures and said, "I know that I may be way off here, but that is not your son anymore.... That is not how he is now..."
.
I said, "I know. He is better now. He is his best self. All the bad is gone and only the good remains and it is better than it ever would have been here."
.
We should not hold onto life here on earth as it is the temporary trappings that distract us from our purpose and the life God has given us to live. How much freer would we be if we simply followed God in a surrendered life rather than running around trying to make our lives work out as we plan hoping God will bless it? Much to ponder here... I'll leave you to your thoughts.
.
I want to leave you today with the ultimate expression of our Living God - Emmanuel, God with Us. We will read a chapter from the book of John this day. Note anything the Spirit reveals to you through this passage about our God, El Chay, the Living God. Jesus, that's His name.
As you weigh the Word you might consider what John is saying about the Jesus He met. Examine carefully what John the Baptist says about Him and then consider what Jesus' interaction with those He first called shows us about His life giving nature! Blessings sweet friends... This is a special treat - A Time in the presence of El Chay (The Living God).
.
John: Chapter One
.
1 In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
.
3 All things were made through Him,
and without Him nothing was made
that was made.
.
4 In Him was life,
and the life was the light of men.
.
5 And the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness did not comprehend it.
.
6 There was a man sent from God,
whose name was John.
.
7 This man came for a witness,
to bear witness of the Light,
that all through him might believe.
.
8 He was not that Light,
but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
.
9 That was the true Light
which gives light to every man
coming into the world.
.
10 He was in the world,
and the world was made through Him,
and the world did not know Him.
.
11 He came to His own,
and His own did not receive Him.
.
12 But as many as received Him,
to them He gave the right to become children of God,
to those who believe in His name:
.
13 who were born,
not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh,
nor of the will of man,
but of God.
.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,
full of grace and truth.
.
15 John bore witness of Him
and cried out, saying,
"This was He of whom I said,
'He who comes after me is preferred before me,
for He was before me.' "
.
16 And of His fullness we have all received,
and grace for grace.
.
17 For the law was given through Moses,
but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
.
18 No one has seen God at any time.
The only begotten Son,
who is in the bosom of the Father,
He has declared Him.
.
19 Now this is the testimony of John,
when the Jews sent priests and
Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,
"Who are you?"
.
20 He confessed,
and did not deny,
but confessed,
"I am not the Christ."
.
21 And they asked him,
"What then? Are you Elijah?"
He said, "I am not."
.
"Are you the Prophet?"
And he answered, "No."
.
22 Then they said to him,
"Who are you,
that we may give an answer to those who sent us?
What do you say about yourself?"
.
23 He said:
"I am 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
"Make straight the way of the Lord,"
' as the prophet Isaiah said."
.
24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.
.
25 And they asked him, saying,
"Why then do you baptize
if you are not the Christ,
nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
.
26 John answered them, saying,
"I baptize with water, but there stands
One among you whom you do not know.
.
27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose."
.
28 These things were done in Bethabara
beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him,
and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away
the sin of the world!
.
30 This is He of whom I said,
'After me comes a Man who is preferred before me,
for He was before me.'
.
31 I did not know Him;
but that He should be revealed to Israel,
therefore I came baptizing with water."
.
32 And John bore witness, saying,
"I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove,
and He remained upon Him.
.
33 I did not know Him,
but He who sent me to baptize
with water said to me,
'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending,
and remaining on Him,
this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
.
34 And I have seen and testified
that this is the Son of God."
.
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.
.
36 And looking at Jesus as He walked,
he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!"
.
37 The two disciples heard him speak,
and they followed Jesus.
.
38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following,
said to them,
"What do you seek?"
They said to Him,
"Rabbi" (which is to say, when translated, Teacher),
"where are You staying?"
.
39 He said to them, "Come and see."
They came and saw where He was staying,
and remained with Him that day
(now it was about the tenth hour).
.
40 One of the two who heard John speak,
and followed Him, was Andrew,
Simon Peter's brother.
.
41 He first found his own brother Simon,
and said to him, "We have found the Messiah"
(which is translated, the Christ).
.
42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said,
"You are Simon the son of Jonah.
You shall be called Cephas" (which is translated, A Stone).
.
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee,
and He found Philip and said to him, "Follow Me."
.
44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida,
the city of Andrew and Peter.
.
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him,
"We have found Him of whom Moses in the law,
and also the prophets, wrote--Jesus of Nazareth,
the son of Joseph."
.
46 And Nathanael said to him,
"Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see."
.
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him,
and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed,
in whom is no deceit!"
.
48 Nathanael said to Him,
"How do You know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree,
I saw you."
.
49 Nathanael answered and said to Him,
"Rabbi, You are the Son of God!
You are the King of Israel!"
.
50 Jesus answered and said to him,
"Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,'
do you believe? You will see greater things than these."
.
51 And He said to him,
"Most assuredly, I say to you,
hereafter you shall see heaven open,
and the angels of God ascending and descending
upon the Son of Man."
.

Update: Names of God Study

Hey Sweet Sisters... I want to thank you for staying with me on my sporadic schedule these last few months. I also want you to know I will be moving my post to Thursdays. With my new class and prepping for it the first three days of the week, I find myself cheating you out of the time that I feel it requires to develop these Names of God posts. So tomorrow's post will be up long before the sun... Check back and see.

You are a blessing to me, and I so appreciate you. If you have not read last week's name of God post, "Ish - Our Bridegroom" then please do so. It is lengthy but so full of my testimony of God's great and amazing love for us.

Blessings.
